Balmain have thrown caution and credit crunch to the wind with their latest fashion statement - a thumb to the nose of those stung by the recession, as they have introduced the world's first pair of jeans intended for everyday wear that cost over £1,000. These jeans currently sell for £1,059 a pair at Joseph, and trade is reportedly "brisk", with just two pairs remaining in the Fulham Road brand of Joseph in West London.
The jeans are skinny, white, low rise and made from cotton. Their designer, Christophe Decarnin, justifies the high price in terms of the "workmanship and high quality materials used". However, the jeans are just made of cotton, and their embellishment consists of rips and holes, not diamonds or even the ever popular ubiquitous swarovski crystals.
Christophe Decarnin has renewed the fortune of Parisian fashion house, Balmain, since he started designing for them in 2005, being more successful than the previous incumbent, Laurent Mercier.
Celebrities who like to be seen out and about in Balmain jeans include Kate Moss (how many bottoms does Kate Moss have because she seems to wear every designer's jeans?), Kylie Minogue and Heidi Klum. We have on this very page a photo of Kylie wearing her Balmain jeans and a frumpy top, leaving Harvey Nichols in Manchester.
Some would say that jeans priced at over £1,000 is a joke, when it is such a basic clothing item. In credit crunch Britain, will there be enough buyers for these jeans outside of Fulham? Will they really make your bottom look any better than a cheaper pair of jeans? In 2005 sales of designer jeans more than doubled, but how many people will be prepared to pay over £1,000 for a pair of jeans?
She added: "Balmain has become the label of the supercool girls . . . the girls in London and Paris who work as assistants at fashion magazines, design studios and PR firms, or who have some terrific family tree connections to swing from."
